What does this evidence portal highlight?
This portal presents evidence on the effectiveness of strategies aimed at preventing conflict and atrocities. It brings together an open access digital platform that includes an evidence gap map with 573 studies, narrative summaries, effect size data, and related outputs. The portal organises evidence across 37 sub categories of interventions, covering both direct strategies such as conflict mediation and accountability, and indirect strategies such as governance reform and civil society support. Most of the mapped research focuses on conflict prevention, with far fewer studies on atrocity prevention, which exposes clear gaps in areas like emergent conflict settings. By consolidating this evidence in one place, the portal provides policymakers, practitioners, and researchers with a structured, evidence informed view of what different strategies achieve, including outcomes like reduced violence and stronger social cohesion, and supports better decision making for future policy and research.
What our evidence covers

- Focuses on conflict and atrocity prevention (CAP) in low- and middle-income countries.
- Includes direct strategies like mediation and legal accountability.
- Covers indirect strategies like governance reform and civil society support.
- Relies on statistical and qualitative methods to evaluate interventions.
- Mostly addresses preventing escalation in ongoing conflicts.
- Includes 573 studies, with 78% focused on conflict prevention.
What Our Evidence Doesn’t Cover
- Few studies focus solely on atrocity prevention (5%).
- Limited research on interventions in emerging or pre-crisis conflicts.
- Long-term and systemic prevention strategies are underrepresented.
- Integrated approaches combining conflict and atrocity prevention are not well-covered.
Why Was This Platform Developed?
Conflict is growing around the world. To help address this issue in an evidence-based way, this portal summarises findings from 573 studies across diplomacy, governance, civil society, and social and economic foundations of peace. The evidence portal highlights what is effective, what isn’t, and where evidence is lacking to support more evidence-informed policy and programming decisions.
